Qu'est-ce que le méthylsulfonylméthane (MSM)?

what is methylsulfonylmethane (msm)?

Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM)

MSM is a sulfur compound present in very small quantities in many foods:

  • fruits
  • vegetables
  • grains
  • milk
  • algae
  • meat
  • seafood, etc.

Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) has been available as a supplement since the late 1990s. It actually comes from the oxidation of a byproduct of wood pulp (pine lignin, for example). Although it comes from a natural raw material, its manufacture involves a chemical process carried out in the laboratory. It is a white powder with a bitter taste.

Therapeutic uses

The hypotheses formulated about its therapeutic uses are mainly based on the role that sulfur compounds play in the body. Thanks to the sulfur it contains, MSM helps preserve immune functions. It also maintains connective tissues (tendons, deep dermis, collagen, cartilage, etc.) in good condition.

MSM would thus play a catalytic role in the process of transforming food into energy. It would also help eliminate toxins from the body.

MSM is therefore sold in tablet form, alone or in combination with other natural health products, including glucosamine and chondroitin. It is also found in products for topical use (oils, ointments, etc.).

Research on MSM

Osteoarthritis

The results of two clinical studies indicate that MSM can relieve osteoarthritis pain. In one of them, 50 subjects suffering from knee osteoarthritis felt a reduction in their joint pain and an improvement in the range of their movements3 after receiving 6 g of MSM per day (dose recommended by practitioners). ) for 12 weeks. Similar results were also obtained in a previous study, using MSM, glucosamine or a combination of both, at doses of 1.5 g per day.

Hay fever

In a preliminary study, 50 people suffering from hay fever took 2.6 g of MSM daily for 30 days and saw their symptoms decrease.

Rosacea

Italian researchers from the San Gallicano Dermatological Institute in Rome have shown that local application of a cream based on MSM and silymarin, a substance produced by milk thistle, can alleviate the symptoms of rosacea.

Miscellaneous

MSM supplement manufacturers' claims regarding other benefits of this product are based on unpublished preliminary trials. These studies have focused on relieving pain from inflammation and osteoarthritis, healing sports injuries more quickly, improving the appearance of hair and nails, and reducing snoring.

We have 2 products that contain it: MyoRub+ and theOsteoArthryl.
